Yard of the Month March 2025

Congratulations to Joe and Becca Dewey of 5429 Worth Street for receiving the Yard of the Month honors for March in the Junius Heights Historic District!

Joe and Becca, along with their sons Denton (8) and Louis (6), moved to the neighborhood from Brooklyn, NY in September 2020 after Joe accepted the role of Vicar at the nearby Church of the Incarnation. Having lived in Brooklyn, they cherished the “stoop life,” where they would hang out on the front stoop and visit with friends and neighbors. This same style of living drew them to Junius Heights, where seeing neighbors on their front porches made them feel immediately at home. The welcoming structure of their home, combined with their passion for hospitality, made it a perfect fit. Their family has since grown with the addition of Florence (2), who brings sheer happiness to all.

The Deweys have undertaken numerous initiatives both inside and outside their Craftsman-style home, built in 1918, to breathe new life into it. Interior updates included modernizing the kitchen and bathrooms, updating the electrical system, and more. Exterior updates involved removing one of two Magnolia trees from the yard and “lifting” the other to open up the view of the house from the street. As “front porch people,” they wanted to see neighbors walking by, and the boys needed plenty of room to play. Other projects included replacing their front walkway and concrete steps, adding a walking path, and repairing and repainting their front porch, making it an oasis for enjoying the outdoors. The porch is adorned with beautiful potted cacti and seasonal flowers. Their backyard is equally well cared for, with native plant beds surrounding each side and a beautiful seating area with a fire pit that Joe built by hand.
