Unidentified Man Soliciting Money

Friday morning, July 4, at 5:45 a.m,. in the 5600 block of Columbia, a black man of medium build, wearing a white baseball cap, shorts, and a sky blue short sleeved shirted, knocked on an elderly woman’s door. She left the chain latched and opened the door slightly, her small dog barking ferociously. The man said his name was Stephen, that he was a neighbor, that he had seen her light was on, and asked for a quick loan to buy three gallons of gas. He claimed he would return quickly and reimburse the money.

The woman said she had no cash and the man left and did not return.

This is a ploy that has been used before in the neighborhood. Please do not give them any money but tell the scam artist you are calling 911.

Smash and Grab in the 5300 Block of Worth

April 3, 2008

There was a “smash and grab” in the 5300 block of Worth Street on Thursday morning, April 3, at 6:30 a.m.. While the residents were sleeping, burglars broke a small pane of glass on a door, reached in, and turned the lock that was in the door. The thieves rushed into the living room where they stole a flat screen TV off the wall above the fireplace. The door had a double cylinder dead bolt but the keys had been left in the door.

It is recommended that a double cylinder lock be installed on doors and the keys not be left in the door. If a burglar does break in, he must exit the way he entered unless he can find a lock to the door. One long-time resident reports that he frequently has seen stacks of merchandise near a door after a burglary because the thieves could not exit quickly.
