Yard of the Month February 2022

Hats off to Faye Greenberg at 5512 Junius Street – Junius Heights Historic District’s Yard of the Month for February 2022!

Faye Greenberg transferred to Dallas in 2003. While looking for a house on the M streets, Faye found a builder with a spec house on Junius Street. Almost 20 years later, Faye is the last original owner in the group of four that were built around the same time.

“The style I like to call French Tudor. Reminds me of living in France while I earned my master’s degree in culinary arts.” – Faye

Faye spent the first couple of years designing the landscape and planting both front and back yards. Her favorite feature is the walk up to the house, which was inspired by her walks on Swiss Avenue. The yard is always well tended thanks to Faye’s hard work and attention to detail. She obviously loves her garden.

Congratulations Faye! Your yard is an inspiration to us all.

Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month January 2022

Congratulations to Maja McFaul at 1617 Abrams Road, January’s winner of the Junius Heights Historic District Yard of the Month!

Maja moved into her cute 1920 bungalow in 2010. Four years ago there was a fire and it has now been completely renovated back to its natural grandeur.

The garden was a gift from an arborist friend who has a horticulture degree and is a garden conservancy fellow. The plants were collected in the wild and from nurseries in Dallas, Austin, and Yucca Do Nursery at Peckerwood Garden. Maja’s friend continues to maintain the garden, which is extremely diverse and clearly a collector’s personal project, they always implement the Top 7 Landscape Lighting Maintenance Tips to keep the place looking impeccable.

Maja remarked, “You can tell it’s a plant nerd’s garden because of the intensive use of space and ‘one of everything’ look to it. Nobody else has ten different agave species in their front yard! All the diversity attracts a wide variety of insects and birds. Especially the pipe vine swallowtail caterpillars and butterflies that are everywhere feeding on the small aristolochia ground cover vines.”

Permanent features are always growing and developing, and lots of seasonal adornments come and go throughout the year.

Congratulations, Maja! Your unique yard and wonderful holiday decorations are what make Junius Heights such an interesting place to live. Thank you!

Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month December 2021

Junius Heights Historic District is pleased to award December’s Yard of the Month to Kyle Landry and Richard Marvin at 5523 Worth Street.

After 15 years of townhome living in nearby Bryan Place, Kyle Landry and Richard Marvin made the move in November 2020 to this modern styled home built in 2005. Kyle has a knack for landscape design, having previously maintained a tropical rooftop patio in their former residence. The big freeze last year killed many of the manicured shrubs in their new Worth Street house. With the opportunity to reinvent, they sought to bring some color into the space. Azaleas and wildflowers filled the beds this spring and summer, transitioning to an assortment of mums and pumpkins this fall. A backyard vegetable garden, fire pit and many tropical plants have helped to create a new oasis perfect for relaxing with their dogs Wyatt and Jasper.

Welcome to Junius Heights Kyle and Richard! We hope you will be happy here for many years to come.
