Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month July 2021

July’s Junius Heights Historic District Yard of the Month goes to Lee and Jessica Horn at 729 Ridgeway.

Lee and Jessica moved into their lovely brick Tudor house, built in 1924, in August of 2016. They updated the landscape at that time. Walton’s Garden Center designed the new landscape and the Horns have maintained it beautifully, making minor adjustments from season to season. Most recently they added a wildflower section along the alley.

Lee says, “It’s been a trial and error with a few plants, though our goal has been to add color to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. It’s Jessica’s happiest day to see the flowers bloom!”

Congratulations to Lee and Jessica on receiving our July Yard of the Month award. Thank you both for all the years you have dedicated to maintaining the beauty of our wonderful neighborhood.

Yard of the Month

Yard of the Month May 2021

Tommy Bourgeois, 5304 Victor, is this month’s winner of Yard of the Month. An avid gardener, Tommy’s yard is always filled with unusual varieties of flowers and plants. He’s a year-round gardener and gets full use of his beautiful yard by enclosing his front porch with screen panels so he can enjoy it when the pesky mosquitoes invade.

His gardens are also a haven for wildlife, as birds delight in his birdbath, and thirsty dogs and cats can drink at a crock that Tommy keeps filled with water for them.

His picket fence is adorned with hundreds of small red roses from the vines he has planted next to them.

Be sure to walk or drive by his lovely home and enjoy this beautiful addition to our neighborhood!

Good Neighbor Award

Good Neighbor Awards April 2021

The Junius Heights Historic District Board is pleased to announce the first ever Good Neighbor Awards! Martha Heimberg and our President Eric Folkerth presented these awards to Mark Wootton and Jesse Moreno for their outstanding efforts in keeping our neighbors warm, fed, hydrated and electronically charged during the 2021 Winter Storm. We agree with Jesse and Mark: “East Dallas is the heart of this town” and we thank them for putting their neighborhood love into action.

Do you know a Good Neighbor deserving of an award? Neighborly acts of kindness, big or small, deserve celebrating! Tag your good neighbors in the comments and tell us a bit about what makes them special. Or, if you prefer anonymity, email us at juniusheightshd@gmail.com with your nomination and story. We’ll collect your stories for consideration of future Good Neighbor Awards on behalf of JHHD.
