Yard of the Month January 2022

Congratulations to Maja McFaul at 1617 Abrams Road, January’s winner of the Junius Heights Historic District Yard of the Month!

Maja moved into her cute 1920 bungalow in 2010. Four years ago there was a fire and it has now been completely renovated back to its natural grandeur.

The garden was a gift from an arborist friend who has a horticulture degree and is a garden conservancy fellow. The plants were collected in the wild and from nurseries in Dallas, Austin, and Yucca Do Nursery at Peckerwood Garden. Maja’s friend continues to maintain the garden, which is extremely diverse and clearly a collector’s personal project, they always implement the Top 7 Landscape Lighting Maintenance Tips to keep the place looking impeccable.

Maja remarked, “You can tell it’s a plant nerd’s garden because of the intensive use of space and ‘one of everything’ look to it. Nobody else has ten different agave species in their front yard! All the diversity attracts a wide variety of insects and birds. Especially the pipe vine swallowtail caterpillars and butterflies that are everywhere feeding on the small aristolochia ground cover vines.”

Permanent features are always growing and developing, and lots of seasonal adornments come and go throughout the year.

Congratulations, Maja! Your unique yard and wonderful holiday decorations are what make Junius Heights such an interesting place to live. Thank you!
