Yard of the Month August 2025
The Garden Cafe, a well loved, aptly named neighborhood eatery, is the winner of Junius Heights Historic District’s August Yard of the Month.
Along the way they also created an eco-friendly garden that is embodied in the restaurant’s name. With perhaps the exception of the chicken coop, the combination of spruce, fruit, and pecan trees, cross vine and morning glory arbors and mixed beds, the outdoor area could easily resemble their customer’s own back yards.
The space surrounding the restaurant’s outdoor seating is a testament to the Garden Cafe’s commitment to locally grown produce. Over time, Dale, the principal gardener, has cultivated from seed a variety of leafy greens and herbs. As a result of his efforts, specially selected sprigs of fresh rosemary, thyme, oregano, mint, lavender and basil all end up in the drinks or on the plates of hungry patrons. In addition, the blackberry harvest inspires many delicious desserts in the spring.
Elsewhere in the yard, and over time, salvaged metal sculptures, stone spheres, pediments, and assorted ceramic and terra cotta pots were added to produce the backyard vibe that Dale and Mark sought to create. Planted among these garden ornaments are reeds and tropical plants, sunflowers, and blooming Crepe Myrtles.
True to their community minded philosophy, The Garden Cafe hosts monthly neighborhood gatherings, sponsors their annual events, and supports the local library and school. With their consistent support and friendship, Dale and Mark have been pivotal to the continuing success of the Junius Heights Historic District.
