Yard of the Month January 2025

Congratulations to Joe and Heather Libson of 5937 Worth for earning the Yard of the Month honors in the Junius Heights Historic District for January 2025! This recognition is a testament to their hard work, creativity, and dedication to transforming their garden into a magical space.

If you’ve strolled past their home at the corner of Worth and Glasgow, you’ve likely noticed the charming transformation of their yard. The Libson’s bought their home in November 2021, drawn by its proximity to Woodrow Wilson High School, where their three daughters would attend.

In April of this year, Joe started a small landscaping project that quickly grew in scope. One of the biggest challenges was removing a massive tree stump, a task Joe and his daughter Violet tackled over three tough weekends. With the stump gone, they had more space to create their dream garden.

Today, their yard features a stunning array of plants, from tropical to desert varieties, all maintained with efficient drip irrigation. Heather has added beautiful ornamental fixtures, and Joe designed a whimsical garden path using stones and reclaimed wood. The path is open for all to walk through and enjoy. A real joy has been watching neighborhood kids headed to/from school walking through the path. At nighttime the path is illuminated by enchanting lights making the garden all the more magical.

Joe calls the garden a “labor of love” and a “work-in-progress,” and he loves seeing neighbors enjoy the whimsical space.
